More rain and storms in Texas today

Another round of rain and storms is expected in several regions of Texas today. Stronger storms can produce hail, localized damaging winds, persistent lightning, and flooding. Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle picked up seven inches of rain yesterday. We also saw two to four inches of rain in western Bexar County in south-central Texas. Those heavy rainfall totals show that tropical moisture is present and favors heavy rainfall.

The highest chance for scattered thunderstorms today will be in Northwest Texas, Big Country, Concho Valley, Permian Basin, North Texas, Hill Country, Central Texas, Edwards Plateau, Brazos Valley, and Southeast Texas. We expect the most rain and storm coverage from this morning until sunset. Storm coverage and intensity will decrease after sunset with the loss of daytime heating. Some activity will persist into the morning hours of Wednesday. Some storms can be severe, with excessive rainfall and risk of flooding. Hopefully, heavier rain will fall in the areas that need it and we will be able to fill some of the lakes in the western half of Texas.

Texas Temperature Forecast

Cloud cover and rain chances will help keep the northeast half of Texas on the cool side this afternoon. High temperatures are expected in the upper 70s and 80s. It will feel pretty embarrassing though. The southwestern half of Texas will reach a high of 90 to 107 degrees. Tomorrow will be a little warmer in the northeast half of Texas. Thursday through Saturday will see drier, summery weather across Texas with afternoon temperatures between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. High soil moisture in the eastern two-thirds of Texas will result in oppressive humidity.

Rain next week?

We may see some increase in rain chances next week, with some long-term signs of more tropical moisture arriving in Texas in about a week to ten days. Otherwise, we’ll keep an eye on the Panhandle on Saturday for isolated severe storms.
