Tennessee 12, Indiana 6 | Knoxville Regional How it happened

Tennessee baseball Tony Vitello, Andrew Behnke and Dean Curley detail regional win over Indiana

Tennessee hit four home runs, while driving in a grand slam by Billy Amick, to escape Indiana Saturday night in the Knoxville regional game 12-6.

With the win, the No. 1 Vols (52-11) earn a spot in the regional championship on Sunday afternoon at 6 o’clock ET. With one more win, the Vols will advance to the Super Regionals. Tennessee will await the winner of Sunday’s elimination contest between No. 2 seed Southern Miss and No. 3 seed Indiana (33-25-1), which will be played at 12 p.m. ET. The winner of that game would have to beat Tennessee twice to win the regional, with a game on Monday if necessary.

Tennessee combined for nine runs in innings two and three and did some good bullpen work throughout the contest. Indiana scored the Vols by three us in the third, but that was the highlight of the contest as the Hoosiers initially fell behind 9-0.

Andrew Behnke (3-1) earned the victory on the mound after pitching 3.1 innings of relief, replacing starter Drew Beam with two left in the fourth. Indiana starting pitcher Connor Foley (4-2) took home the loss after allowing eight runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The Vols will have a chance to advance to super regional play at Lindsey Nelson Stadium with a win to close out the Knoxville Regional on Sunday, but before that, here’s how it all went down on a Saturday night win over Indiana.
