Louise Rittenhouse Obituary – Formerly of Villanova, PA

Louise R. Rittenhouse, formerly of Villanova Devoted mother, Louise R. Rittenhouse, died Wednesday, January 20, at The Quadrangle after a long battle with cancer. Born in Schwenksville, PA on September 6, 1926, the daughter of Franklin and Bessie Renninger, Louise attended Hood College (1948) and married George B. Rittenhouse of Evanston, IL in April 1951. They settled in Villanova, where Louise lived for 57 years. She was a long-time active and supportive member of both Main Line Unitarian Church and Hood College, where she won the annual “Excellence in Service Award” in 2008. Louise was an enthusiastic learner and attended countless School Night classes. Main Line in Creutzburg, for which he received the Lifelong Learner Award in 2013; Current affairs and Russian literature were her favorites. Louise loved art and completed the Barnes Foundation Art Appreciation and Philosophy course, taught by Miss Violette deMazia. Louise was energetic, sociable and had a knack for developing friendships quickly due to her ease of sharing and listening. She traveled the world with George visiting places as varied as Prince Edward Island, London, Paris, Rome, Jerusalem, St. Petersburg, Machu Picchu, Casablanca and Timbuktu. Louise was an avid tennis player and she played 3 times a week until she was 85 years old. Louise is survived by her brother, Franklin H. Renninger; her four children Elizabeth L. Rittenhouse (Steven Dupont), Ann R. Rittenhouse (George Crawford), Peter A. Rittenhouse (Denise Lokhorst) and Amy R. Rittenhouse (Thomas Russell); and her five grandchildren, Rebecca and Alexandra Dupont, Alice and Henry Russell and Zoe Crawford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 6 at 2 pm at Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 S. Valley Forge Rd, Devon, PA 19333. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 S. Valley Forge Rd, Devon, PA 19333; or to Main Line School Night, 260 Gulph Creek Road, Radnor, PA 19087.
