It’s been a long weekend better suited to the ducks, but for some hardy souls the Cottesloe Beach washing machine waves were too gnarly to endure.

And on Sunday, this prompted The West Australian photographer Ross Swanborough to capture this super photo of the notable upside-down surfer taking the fast route to the bottom – and perhaps regretting his decision to hit the waves.

A little further south, a lone kitesurfer braved the choppy and messy conditions at Leighton Beach as a group of keen anglers took advantage of the cloudy and windy day to cast their lines.

A severe thunderstorm late on Saturday brought heavy rain, damaging winds and hail to much of WA, with Bunbury the worst affected.

Perth recorded around 43mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday, with a downpour earlier in the week set to dampen plans for WA Day at Burswood Park.

Event organizers Celebrate WA made the decision to cancel on Thursday afternoon after inspecting soggy grounds that were obviously unsuitable for hosting the two-day event on Sunday and Monday.

“We understand the disappointment this may cause and apologize for any inconvenience. The safety of our attendees, staff and artists is our top priority,” Celebrate WA said.

However, celebrations will continue across much of WA, with regional centers planning a host of activities.
