Flower Mound and Lovejoy learn state semifinal matchups; Grapevine is also heading to the state

Three Dallas-area baseball teams will travel to Dell Diamond in Round Rock this week for the UIL state tournament.

On its way to becoming state champions for the first time, Lovejoy baseball must defeat a team that won it all in the UIL state tournament last year.

Lovejoy (29–7–2) will face defending Class 5A state champion Magnolia West (26–14–1) for the first Class 5A state semifinal on Thursday at 4 p.m. Magnolia West beat Argyle 3-2 in the last year’s 5A state final.

Grapevine (38–5), the newly crowned Region I 5A champion, will play Leander Rouse (34–9–1) in the second Class 5A state semifinal at 7 p.m. on Thursday. This will be Grapevine’s third trip to the state tournament in program history. Grapevine won its first and only state title in 2016 and was a state finalist in 2017.

Leander Rouse advanced to the state tournament for the second time in program history, last appearing in 2021 when it lost to Hallsville in the 5A state semifinal.

On Friday, reigning Class 6A state champion Flower Mound (40-5) will continue its title defense against 2023 6A state finalist Pearland (36-8-2) at 4 p.m. This will be a rematch of last year’s 6A state final game, which Flower Mound won 6-4 for its second state title in program history.

A Dallas-area team has won a UIL baseball state championship during the last five postseasons (no champion was crowned in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). These three programs will try to keep that streak going.
