Spring Fire burns 3,000 acres near Girasol

SUNFLOWER, AZ (AZ Family) — Part of a major highway in the East Valley has reopened after being closed for several hours due to a rapidly growing wildfire that started near Girasol on Saturday.

According to the Tonto National Forest, the Spring Fire was reported just east of SR 87 on Forest Service Road 11 near mile marker 210 and has spread to approximately 3,000 acres in size as of 9 p.m. with 0% containment. .

About 140 firefighters, including five interagency fire teams, seven engines, two helicopters, two air tankers and several air tankers, are being used to battle the flames.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the northbound lanes of State Route 87 were closed near mile markers 204 to 218 due to the wildfire. The left lane opened around 8 p.m. However, the right lane remains closed as crews continue to battle the fire. There is no estimated time for the reopening of the right lane.
