New York dentist faces tax fraud charges

NEW WINDSOR, New York — Fernando Ehrhardt, a 51-year-old licensed dentist from New York, was charged with multiple tax-related offenses, including third- and fourth-degree criminal tax fraud and repeated failure to file personal income and gains taxes. These non-bailable charges led to Ehrhardt’s release on his own recognizance following his arraignment on Tuesday.

Ehrhardt allegedly failed to file personal tax returns and had unpaid tax obligations from 2016 to 2020 while working at several dental offices in Orange County. He is accused of defrauding the State of New York of more than thirteen thousand dollars. This follows a previous tax order against him in August 2017 for unpaid taxes from 2010 to 2013.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The case is now being handled by the Orange County White Collar Crime Task Force.

This multi-agency task force, formed in March 2023, is committed to addressing public corruption and financial crime. It includes representatives from various law enforcement agencies from across Orange County and the state.

District Attorney David M. Hoovler emphasized the importance of each individual’s tax responsibilities and praised collaborative efforts to uncover and prosecute tax fraud. Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reiterated the serious consequences that await those who neglect their legal tax obligations.
