Tennessee Governor Signs Bill Requiring Domestic Violence Offenders to Wear GPS Device

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a bill that would require a court to order domestic violence offenders to wear a GPS device in the state.

HB2692/SB1972 would require the offender to use the GPS device unless it no longer poses a threat to the alleged victim or public safety. The bill was signed by the governor on Tuesday.

The legislation would also provide the victim of domestic assault with a device that would allow him or her to know if the offender is within a prescribed proximity of the “victim’s cellular device or electronic receiving device.”

Additionally, the law requires a county or municipality that uses GPS devices to enter into a written agreement with a qualified contracted service provider. It also eliminates civil and criminal liability in certain circumstances.

The bill’s sponsors are Senator Paul Rose (R-District 32) and Representative Clay Doggett (R-District 70).
