NWS issues statement on ‘beach hazards’ with ‘life-threatening’ swimming conditions on Chicago beaches – NBC Chicago

The National Weather Service sent out a beach hazard statement for parts of the Chicago area on Wednesday, warning of high waves and dangerous currents on Lake Michigan.

According to the NWS, the alert was issued for Lake, Porter and Northern LaPorte counties in Indiana, and Central Cook County in Illinois. It was expected to remain in effect until Wednesday evening, according to the NWS.

“Strong waves and dangerous currents are expected on Lake Michigan beaches,” the alert said, noting that waves of three to six feet could be expected. NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Román said waves could reach up to seven feet at times.

“Swimming conditions will be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers,” the alert continues.

On Wednesday morning, the Chicago Park District’s beaches website showed that swimming was “prohibited” at all Chicago-area beaches. Conditions will be updated at 11 a.m., according to the website.

Chicago’s forecast Wednesday called for a mostly dry day, with lakefront showers gradually coming to an end during the morning, NBC 5’s storm team said. Temperatures will be below average, with highs in the 60s and 70s. degrees, but colder along the lake.

The next chance for showers and storms will arrive on Saturday, the NBC 5 Storm Team added.
