North Carolina Department of Health launches problem gambling treatment program

Participating parties include the NCDHHS Problem Gambling Program, the East Carolina University Gambling Policy and Research Initiative, and Birches Health.

USA – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Problem Gambling Program, East Carolina University’s (ECU) Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI), and Birches Health have partnered to offer gambling disorder resources and treatment options to gamblers in the state. Individuals seeking help can access the program through the North Carolina Gamblers Hotline.

NCDHHS Problem Gambling Administrator Amanda Winters “We are excited to support our partners at GRPI and Birches Health as they work to launch a first-of-its-kind, metrics-based telehealth treatment pilot program for problem gambling addiction. These initiatives are crucial to ensuring North Carolina residents have access to the highest quality treatment and services.”

Founder and CEO of Birches Health Elliott Rapaport She added: “We are proud to support the groundbreaking research being conducted by GRPI in direct collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Problem Gambling Program. We believe this initiative will inform better treatment of gambling disorders and help guide clinical outcomes for programs nationwide to ensure reduction of gambling-related harm.”

Director of GRPI Dr. Michelle Malkin She commented: “The more providers can identify the types of support different clients need based on a whole-person approach, the better results we can have in keeping clients in recovery and reducing potential negative outcomes, such as the high suicide rate among people with gaming disorder.”
