Now that Chicago’s second NASCAR street race has taken place, Chicago residents, workers and commuters may be wondering when the streets will reopen for good.

While some streets began reopening almost immediately after the race on Sunday night, others were not expected to reopen until several days later, or more than a week in some cases. According to Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, streets will reopen in a “phased approach,” with DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive given priority.

Here is the full reopening schedule:

Monday, July 8th

  • The northbound section of DuSable Lake Shore Drive will reopen at 6 a.m.
  • Northbound and southbound Michigan Avenue between Roosevelt Road and Monroe Street will reopen at noon. However, one lane will be closed on northbound Michigan Avenue between Jackson and Van Buren.

Tuesday, July 9th

  • Southbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive will reopen Tuesday at 11 p.m.

According to OEMC, major closures will end in the coming days and “inner perimeter” closures could continue until the middle of next week. Some could remain in place until the runway wall, fencing and viewing structures are dismantled.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on July 18, OEMC said.
