Chicago experienced a wave of gun violence over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend, during which 102 people were shot, including at least a dozen who died, according to police reports.

According to the Chicago Police Department’s Major Incident Reporting system, from 6 p.m. July 3 to 6 a.m. July 7, at least 100 people were shot and 17 of them died from their injuries. Two more people were shot later on July 7, according to police.

The gun violence tally over Chicago’s Independence Day weekend this year marks an increase of about 27% in shootings from last year: In 2023, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that at least 73 people were shot over the four-day weekend, including 11 who died.

In the United States, police statistics and independent researchers have consistently pointed to the summer months as a time of heightened gun violence, with July 1-7 being an especially violent period each year for both mass shootings and individual incidents.

July 4 itself saw more mass shootings in the United States than any other calendar day in roughly a decade, according to a 2023 CNN analysis of mass shooting data from the Gun Violence Archive since 2014. The second-most shooting day was the following day, July 5.

Heat, experts say, can increase anger and aggression, making it a potential catalyst for violence at a time when children are out of school and warmer weather is driving more people outdoors in a country with more guns than people.

On Friday, after dozens of people were shot in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a statement addressing the violence.

“We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in grief and extend our deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by these recent events,” Johnson said in the statement. “The City of Chicago is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors.”

The city had canceled time off for police officers to “maximize presence and ensure rapid response to incidents,” activated an emergency services assistance center to provide support to people in the community and would hold a community rally Friday afternoon to “promote togetherness, support and healing,” according to Johnson.

But the efforts did not end with the shootings.

One of those killed over the weekend was an 8-year-old boy who was shot along with two other children, ages 5 and 8, according to Chicago Police Department online records.

Police say several youths between the ages of 15 and 16 were also among those shot over the weekend.

In another incident, eight people between the ages of 18 and 74 suffered gunshot wounds, and in another incident, seven people between the ages of 15 and 40 were shot. The 40-year-old died, according to the police department.

CNN has reached out to the mayor’s office and Chicago police for comment and additional information on the weekend shootings.

Overall, the city reported 617 homicides in 2023, though Chicago police data showed a 13% drop in murders that year compared to the previous year, when 709 people were killed.
