Hurricane Beryl live updates: Storm strengthens into Category 2 hurricane as Texas braces for impact

Hurricane Beryl is heading towards the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Beryl has intensified into a hurricane and is expected to strengthen further before making landfall tonight on the southeastern coast of Texas.

The hurricane is moving toward Houston with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and is located 105 miles (170 kilometers) east of the city of Corpus Christi, the National Hurricane Center said.

It is expected to be a Category 2 storm when it makes landfall near Houston.

More than a million people in Texas have been placed under a hurricane warning and are preparing for storm surge, flash flooding and high winds.

Acting Gov. Dan Patrick declared 120 counties as disaster areas ahead of the storm and warned that Beryl “will be a deadly storm.”

School systems, airports and major oil transportation operations have been suspended and will remain closed through the day on Monday.

Beryl has already left a trail of destruction as a Category 5 hurricane in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Beryl became a hurricane before making landfall

With maximum sustained winds increasing to near 75 mph (120 km/h), Beryl has been upgraded to a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.

The hurricane will gain further strength before making landfall on the Texas coast on Monday, he added.

Beryl has been an extraordinary storm, setting records as the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever documented.

It has caused significant destruction throughout the Caribbean, particularly affecting the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Mayreau, Union and Grenada.

Beryl was one of the most powerful storms ever to hit Jamaica, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power.

Beryl is expected to be the first hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. in the 2024 season.

The National Weather Service continues to forecast that Tropical Storm Beryl will impact Texas as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday morning.

This will make Beryl the first Atlantic hurricane to hit the United States during the 2024 summer/fall hurricane season.

Houston airport may cancel flights due to Beryl’s arrival

Houston airport has said flight delays or cancellations are possible as Beryl approaches Texas.

He said that even for flights departing or arriving at destinations outside the storm’s direct path, “airlines may have to adjust flight schedules and routes due to the hurricane’s overall impact on their network.”

He urged people not to seek shelter at the airport during the storm.

“As the storm approaches and people plan to stay home and out of the storm, we want to remind everyone that our airports are not equipped to serve as storm shelters. We lack the supplies and staff to accommodate people seeking shelter during the storm,” he said.

Floridians unite to help victims of Hurricane Beryl

Florida communities are coming together to help other communities affected by Hurricane Beryl.

The storm killed at least nine people in the Caribbean and hit the island of Carriacou in Grenada earlier this week.

Floridians, who are well aware of the power of hurricanes, have begun donating critical items and volunteering their time to prepare donated goods for shipment to hurricane-affected communities that need them most.

Texas residents brace for power outages and flooding as Beryl nears landfall

Increasingly intense rain and winds began to lash residents along the Texas coast as powerful storm Berly approached after leaving a trail of devastation in parts of Mexico and the Caribbean.

Although Beryl remained a tropical storm Sunday as it moved toward Texas, it threatened to potentially regain hurricane strength in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall early Monday.

The storm was projected to make landfall in the middle of the Texas coast around Matagorda Bay, an area about 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Houston, but officials warned the track could still change.

Texas officials warned that the storm would cause power outages and flooding, but they also expressed concern that not enough coastal residents and beachgoers in Beryl’s path are heeding warnings to leave. “One of the things that we’re a little concerned about is that we’ve checked all the roads that go off the coast and the maps are still green,” said Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is serving as the state’s acting governor.
