BENWOOD, W.Va. (WTRF) — A fire has broken out in a storage silo at the Ohio County Mine on 4th St. in Benwood.

Police Chief Frank Longwell says a patrolman spotted flames and smoke coming from the silo around 10 p.m. Sunday.

The fire was extinguished within an hour and no injuries were reported.

Several agencies reported the fire, including Wheeling, which brought in a high-rise fire escape to reach the top of the 15-story silo.

The fire was determined to have originated in a coal mining belt.

The facility is owned by the Ohio County Coal Company.
