Excessive heat warning issued for 8 Arizona counties

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for eight Arizona counties this weekend.

Daytime high temperatures of up to 117 degrees are expected in the Phoenix area.

The warning will be in effect through the holiday weekend for Maricopa, Pinal, Coconino, Yavapai, Mohave, La Paz and Yuma counties. It covers Pima County through Friday and Saturday.

While everyone is at risk for heat-related illnesses, the Arizona Department of Health Services says young children are especially vulnerable. Residents are advised to move activities indoors with air conditioning and for children to wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

Other important precautions include seeking shade, staying hydrated, and being informed about local weather conditions. Frequent breaks to hydrate and monitoring for symptoms of heat-related illnesses can help prevent serious health problems during this period of extreme heat.
