Chicago begins countdown to green flag for second NASCAR street race in Grant Park

CHICAGO (CBS) — The second annual NASCAR Chicago street race will be held in Grant Park this weekend, and organizers on Friday lined up a series of events across the city ahead of the two big races on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday’s festivities included Bubba’s Block Party at Douglass Park on the West Side, hosted by driver Bubba Wallace, one of two Black drivers to win the NASCAR Cup Series. The party featured food vendors, live performances by Twista and others, and even NASCAR racing simulators.

“For my grandson to be here is an honor, and for NASCAR to go out into the community and show that there is diversity and opportunities for young people of color to become racers, I think it’s incredible,” said attendee Stephanie Jackson.

Wallace said it was “humbling” to see the crowds turn out for his event.

“In my case, I feel I have a responsibility,” he said. “I look different from my competitors. Since 2013, what are we? Two or three?”

Meanwhile, Grant Park was abuzz with pre-race activity. The doors to the NASCAR ticket booth opened Friday afternoon as a large group of fans rushed to pick up their tickets for Saturday and Sunday’s races.

Excitement builds for second NASCAR street race in Chicago

While that was happening, the race teams were making their final preparations for the weekend.

Some fans were able to watch the process up close as race cars were pushed down the street on their way to various inspections.

NASCAR fans were excited for the weekend. One fan was especially excited to learn that NASCAR is making an effort to reach out and interact with different parts of the city.

“Often people on the West Side don’t get to experience that, and to have that street party in Douglass Park I think is phenomenal for the city and says a lot about Chicago and NASCAR,” said Pamela Buchanan.

Bubba’s Block Party will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

The Xfinity Series Loop 110 begins at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday

The Grant Park 165 NASCAR Cup Series race begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
