Miami Heat lose forward Caleb Martin to Philadelphia 76ers in free agency

The Miami Heat will suffer a major loss on Saturday morning as forward Caleb Martin will reportedly sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news, reporting: “Free agent F Caleb Martin is finalizing a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN. A shock addition for the Sixers, who add the veteran from Miami with playoff experience.”

Martin played a significant role for the Heat over the past three seasons, especially during their run to the 2023 NBA Finals. He was considered the runner-up for the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, excelling when the team needed him most.

The Heat were already being ridiculed on social media for an offseason filled with silence, but this departure will make things worse. Miami’s frontcourt is now highlighted by Jimmy Butler, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Nikola Jovic. Attention is turning to holding forward Haywood Highsmith, who the Sixers are also interested in. Fans are hoping the loss of Martin will mean Highsmith will return on a long-term, team-friendly contract.

“Over the past two seasons, Martin has averaged 13.6 points on 50 percent shooting and 44 percent shooting from 3-point range against the Celtics (including regular season and playoffs),” Wojnarowski said. “That’s his most points per game against an Eastern Conference opponent in that span, according to @ESPNStatsInfo.”
