At least three people were killed amid Fourth of July celebrations after a driver suspected of operating his truck under the influence of alcohol crashed into a park on the Lower East Side and struck 10 people, police and city officials said.

The gray SUV ran a stop sign near Water Street and Jackson Street before jumping the curb and flying into Corlears Hook Park around 9 p.m. EST, NYPD brass said at an evening news conference.

The park was packed with families enjoying their holidays when the truck sped into the road and ran over 10 people. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene and found four people trapped under the truck.

Crews worked to lift the truck and rescue the injured as quickly as possible. Several victims were taken to area hospitals, but at least three people died from their injuries, senior law enforcement officials told NBC New York.

The driver appeared to have alcohol on his breath, according to NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the tragic incident and said investigators did not believe it was terrorism-related.

Maddrey said witnesses ran to the truck and pulled out the driver, holding him until police arrived to take him into custody.

The ages of the injured and dead victims in the crash are not yet known, but Maddrey said two of them are young children.

At the NYPD news conference, officials reported a total of nine patients and two deaths. Senior law enforcement officials said moments later that a third death had been reported and a 10th patient had been admitted to a hospital with facial injuries.
