Hurricane Beryl weakens to Category 2 and could hit Texas by the end of the weekend

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Beryl weakened to a Category 2 storm Friday morning.

The National Hurricane Center said the hurricane is expected to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula in the coming hours.


According to the 5 a.m. update, Beryl’s winds are around 110 mph, with higher gusts. The NHC said Beryl is expected to weaken rapidly after it moves inland and crosses the Yucatan Peninsula. However, it is expected to slowly re-intensify once it moves over the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters said Beryl is expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Friday night and then move northwestward toward northern Mexico and southern Texas by the end of the weekend.
