Good thing they did it twice! Basketball legend Magic Johnson officially kicked off SZN’s summer vacation by announcing on social media that he, his family, and their large group of A-list friends were embarking on their annual summer adventure. The “crime scene” is the same Phoenix 2 they rented last year.

For over a decade, Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie have spent three to six weeks each summer sailing the Mediterranean in the company of close friends. They drop some of these friends off along the way and pick up others, and for the past couple of years they have been sharing some of their adventures with their fans and followers on social media. Magic may be 64, but he’s no ordinary 60-year-old!

Because he’s such adept at generating content for social media (or someone on his team is), his summer vacation has become an aspirational dream and a viral story in its own right. So when he announced earlier this week that he had officially gone on vacation, interest in his choice of superyacht peaked.

Last summer, Magic & Co. chartered the Phoenix 2 superyacht through Burgess, arguably the largest charter platform for clients like him. The vacation lasted an incredible six weeks, and Magic capped it off with a very surprising post thanking the crew for making it so special.

It wasn’t a promotion, and as it turns out, it wasn’t a lie either. Proof of this is the fact that Johnson has returned to Phoenix 2 for the second year in a row. What better confirmation of a good thing than a customer coming back for a second helping, right?

This summer, the Johnsons are joined by actor Samuel L. Jackson and comedian Cedric the Entertainer, along with their significant others and a small group of friends. Last year, Jackson stayed with the Johnsons for the entire duration of the cruise, so this year will likely be no different. Jimmy Kimmel isn’t there — he’s just trolling.

The Phoenix 2 superyacht has just been refitted at the Lurssen-Wreft shipyard in Germany and is in tip-top condition. It is also for sale (still), just in case you have 125 million euros (135.2 million dollars at the current exchange rate), give or take a few cents, to buy yourself a floating palace. The superyacht has been on the market for the past two years.

Phoenix 2, an Art Deco marvel with no direct rival

Phoenix 2 is a German custom-built luxury yacht by Lurssen. She was delivered to the owner in 2010 and was the follow-up to a smaller, less pretentious starter yacht named Phoenix (now Aurora). Designed by Polish financier Jan Kulczyk, Phoenix 2 has remained in the family following Kulczyk’s death in 2015.

The inspiration for this 90-metre (295-foot) superyacht came from the New York cityscape and the Art Deco style, but words alone don’t do it justice. Winch Design’s interiors are like a trip back in time – full of life, lush and vibrant in an alternative universe, but they are also modern and luxurious at the same time.

Think geometric patterns, shiny surfaces, lots of touches of chrome and gold, monochrome areas that immediately stand out, and luxurious fabrics that offer a soothing counterpoint to the visual stimulation provided by everything else.

Phoenix 2’s interiors have been compared to independent art collections and the description remains accurate after the refurbishment. Every detail, from the door handles to the artwork on the walls, including the bas-relief jazz orchestra that watches over the formal dining table, has been hand-crafted and perfectly selected to fit the theme. Nothing has been left to chance.

The amenities are as outrageous as you would expect from a superyacht described as “You can almost see Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan doing the foxtrot” In the Grand Ballroom. Of course the Phoenix 2 has a Grand Ballroom! Of course it’s designed around a gold and black Steinway grand piano.

They include accommodation for up to 14 guests in seven cabins, two helipads and two private cinemas, one of which has its own popcorn maker, so you never have to wait for freshly made popcorn to be brought to you from the galleys. There is a large swimming pool and jacuzzi for guests, and another jacuzzi on the owner’s private terrace. There is also a state-of-the-art gym and wellness area featuring a spa and hammam, as well as massage specialists and a personal trainer.

Phoenix 2 also features a climate-controlled winter garden, several bars, including a striking one, and garages packed with toys and equipment that enhance its multigenerational appeal. The beach club is larger and features a 4-meter (13.1-foot) deep swimming platform with hydraulic steps.

Power comes from two 2,670 hp MTU engines, allowing the Phoenix 2 to reach a top speed of 18 knots (20.7 mph/33 kph). At cruising speed, the range is an impressive 6,000 nautical miles (6,905 miles/1,112 km).

Phoenix 2 “challenge the limits of what is possible” According to the advertisement, for 124,950,000 euros (135.2 million dollars), which is the sale price, one could not expect anything less.
