18-year-old Ohioan dies in North Carolina drowning accident

NAGS HEAD, NC (WNCT) — An 18-year-old Columbus man drowned Wednesday in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Representatives from the Nags Head Fire and Rescue Department and the Nags Head Police Department confirmed that a body was pulled from the ocean on Wednesday.


The body was confirmed to be that of an 18-year-old man from Columbus. His identity has not yet been released.

Officers were called to the Gull Street public beach access on South Virginia Dare Trail around 2:51 p.m. to assist swimmers in distress. Two of the swimmers managed to return safely to shore, with one of them receiving assistance from a lifeguard. The third swimmer was not seen at the time.

Air support was requested, but before they arrived, a Nags Head police officer found the third swimmer with the help of a drone. A lifeguard brought him to shore and took him to a hospital. Despite medical intervention, the third swimmer was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other swimmers were taken to a hospital for treatment.
