Technician injured while setting up fireworks show in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — Calhoun County’s annual Jax Fest was canceled Wednesday night after a worker was injured while setting up fireworks.

A news release from the city of Jacksonville said a fireworks projectile unexpectedly detonated while being set up. An injured technician was airlifted to UAB Hospital and is in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The device, which is activated by a computer-controlled electric match, had no power source connected to it. The state fire marshal is investigating the incident.

According to the city, the fireworks company plans to hold another show at a later date. Residents may hear fireworks going off at the Public Safety Complex over the next few days while the site is safely dismantled.
