PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 7-year-old boy has died in a farming accident in Montgomery Township, Franklin County.

The boy died Tuesday when he was struck by a farm machine in the area of ​​Young and Mercersburg roads in Montgomery Township around 10 a.m., CBS affiliate WHP-TV reported. Authorities said the boy was helping in the field at the time of the crash.

There was no evidence that a crime had been committed, the television station reported. Authorities did not release other details, including the boy’s name.

Franklin County is located in south-central Pennsylvania, and the southern part of the county borders Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Farm Accidents in Pennsylvania

Last year, 33 people died from injuries sustained in agriculture-related incidents, according to research from the College of Agricultural Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. The university said 37 people died in 2022.

The research, according to Penn State, shows that fatal incidents involving farms “disproportionately affected young children and older adults.”
