Jacksonville City Council support staff receive Good Government Award

Former City Council President Ron Salem, whose year-long term ended June 30, recognized four “exemplary” Jacksonville city staffers with an award named after a heralded former council auditor.

The 2024 Robert O. Johnson Good Government Award recipients were Public Information Officer Teresa Eichner, Legislative Services Chief Merriane Lahmeur and Assistant Council Auditor Phillip Peterson, who work for the City Council; and Deputy General Counsel Mary Staffopoulos, who provides legal services for the council but works for the General Counsel’s Office, according to Eichner.

Salem honored the quartet at a recent council meeting. Briefly tearing up, he said he was “blessed to have them” during his presidency, as they maintained the “delicate balancing act” between the work of the council and public transparency. “These four people were lifesavers.”

Johnson — City Council Auditor from 1977 to 2003 — set a benchmark for integrity and honesty, he said.
