Southern California hillside communities are used to seeing bears, but people in Chatsworth were shocked to see one lurking in their neighborhood.

The tagged bear was spotted around 11 p.m. Monday and was being tracked by the Los Angeles Police Department before it hid behind some buildings.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has also been notified and is monitoring the situation.

A bear is seen wandering the streets of Chatsworth.

“We are aware of the bear’s presence in Chatsworth and are responding with our human-wildlife conflict staff. We understand the public’s curiosity and interest, but crowds and media presence tend to slow the animal’s movement,” said Tim Daly of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

No injuries have been reported.

Authorities hope the bear will return to the hills on its own.
