An influx of travelers has flooded Bush Intercontinental Airport in recent days as Houston airports prepare for a record 19 million passengers over the summer, and nearly 2 million over the next week alone.

On Monday night, hundreds of travelers lined the departure sidewalks of the airport’s Terminal C waiting for shuttles and shuttle services as parking lots were near capacity.

On Tuesday, the garages at terminals A and B were 92% full around 1 pm. The garages in terminals C, D and E were 100% full. The ecopark lots ranged between 72% and 88% occupancy.

And despite a new active cargo policy implemented to effectively streamline the airport’s traffic flow, Melissa Correa, spokesperson for the Houston Airport System, said there has consistently been a large influx of people entering and exiting the airport, and the Monday’s congestion was no different than most days.

“Monday night we had a moderate buildup of traffic,” he said.

“It’s essentially like a World Series game, a Super Bowl game and a Taylor Swift concert at the airport,” he said. “Houston is known for traffic. The airport is no different.”

The airport’s new active cargo policy is supposed to streamline curbside operations and reduce congestion by ensuring arriving and departing passengers are ready to go as soon as they reach the curb. But Correa said the policy has unnerved some people.

“Before, people would stop and wait, but all those delays of a few minutes would build up and build up,” he said. “It’s a simple and annoying message we give: stay out of traffic until passengers are ready.”

On Monday, on the sidewalks of the terminals packed with travelers, long lines formed for those waiting to be transferred to other parking lots.

Parking Spot, which regularly transports a large majority of airport commuters, was unable to make a representative available to comment on the shuttle service’s long wait times on Tuesday.

Correa said that with an influx of travelers, it’s not so easy to attribute long wait times on shuttle service to airport construction.

An airport terminal redevelopment project is underway as the largest expansion program in the airport’s history. The project will renovate Terminal D and improve current and future roadways and sidewalk capacity limitations, according to the airport system. Another United Airlines Terminal B project at the airport is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

“If Ecopark has a shuttle every few minutes, but there is an influx of cars, their shuttles are also stuck in traffic,” Melissa Correa, a spokeswoman for the Houston Airport System, said Tuesday.

“Every day this summer is travel day,” Melissa Correa, a spokeswoman for the Houston Airport System, said Tuesday. “Again, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays are the peak of peaks.”

United Airlines, the city’s largest airline, flies an average of 490 flights, with around 55,000 customers, from IAH every day. The airline expects more than 5 million passengers during the Independence Day weekend airline-wide.

A United Airlines Next plan aimed at accommodating the airline’s growth aims to introduce hundreds of wider-gauge aircraft over the next decade with greater capacities, according to the Houston Airport System, citing the plan as a contributing factor to the increase. of congestion at the airport.

The airport system encourages people to reserve parking online at least 12 hours in advance and arrive early with enough time to navigate the airport.
