Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott expected to join Division Rival after 2024 season

The Dallas Cowboys have taken a risky approach when it comes to retaining their biggest stars for the future, particularly QB Dak Prescott.

Instead of signing Prescott to a new extension after one of his best seasons in the NFL, in which he led the MVP conversation for most of the year, Jerry Jones opted to sit idly by and even publicly stated that the plan is to let the Cowboys franchise QB. play the last year of his current contract.

While Prescott’s postseason struggles have been well-documented, he enters 2024 as the NFL’s No. 6 QB according to Pro Football Focus and if he hits the open market after this season, there will be a minimum of five teams, probably more. lining up to make him the highest-paid QB in the NFL.

Jones and the Dallas Cowboys brass are taking a major risk, and while some experts believe the organization still plans to reach a long-term deal with Prescott, the QB now has all the power and shouldn’t have any urgency to sign.

Prescott led the NFL in several key categories in 2023 with 4,516 passing yards (third), 36 touchdowns (first), nine interceptions and a 72.7 QBR (second in the NFL).

His 89.8 passing grade in the regular season ranked second only to Tua Tagovailoa. His 73.5 passing grade under pressure was No. 1. His 37 big throws in the regular season were the most in the NFL, and his 2.0% turnover-worthy play rate was the lowest among NFL quarterbacks. field with at least 400 dropbacks.

Prescott was efficient, aggressive and precise, although with a poor performance at the end of the year.

So now, Jerry Jones and the Dallas decision makers have a huge decision on their hands, but Prescott has all the power. Now that Trevor Lawrence just signed a deal that pays him the same amount of money as Joe Burrow, Prescott’s price tag has only increased and reports have surfaced that he is now demanding $60 million per year.

At this point, there is a very real possibility that Prescott could choose the team that will be more than happy to pay him what he asks and Bleacher Report believes that the Cowboys QB will fit perfectly with his current team’s division rival in 2025.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback expected to sign with New York Giants in 2025

When asked about his team’s sense of urgency ahead of a potential breakout campaign, Prescott didn’t seem nervous about the situation.

“To be honest, this is the urgency that you should always have,” he told reporters. “Maybe kids who normally wouldn’t feel it, feel it. I don’t mind. I’ve been in this position before. I am a player. I will bet on myself and my boys.”

Prescott sounds like a quarterback who knows he will have a list of teams willing to pay him high-end starting quarterback money regardless of what happens in the 2024 campaign.

And in a recent Bleacher Report article, there is a belief that the Dallas Cowboys might have to play Prescott twice a year if they actually let him walk.

Here’s why BR believes Prescott will be a good fit for the New York Giants.

Daniel Jones may only have one more season to prove that he can be the New York Giants’ franchise quarterback.

After a promising rookie campaign in 2019, throwing for 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Jones threw just 38 touchdowns and 28 interceptions in 47 games.

Although the Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension last offseason, they can designate him as a post-June 1 cut and save $30.5 million in 2025.

If Jones struggles to move the ball through the air with rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is already turning heads in practice, the club must find a quarterback who can elevate the offense.

The Giants know what Dak Prescott can do on the field. He usually plays well against them, and the Dallas Cowboys are 12-2 against New York with him starting.

Saquon Barkley left New York for a division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. Prescott can do the same, signing with Big Blue to hit the Cowboys.
